A child development specialist told me today we need to practice regulation strategies when we are not under the gun because when adrenaline starts pumping we need the habits for self-regulation to kick in automatically as habits. We won't be so conscious during panic time. We won't necessarily be able to tell ourselves: take a deep breath. It has to be trained into our nervous system. When I feel uncomfortable, tightness in my chest, irritationI, nervousness, whatever is the lesser form of full blown sadness, anger or fear, I do (this). Practicing over and over creates the possibility the tools will kick in when the s hits the f.

This is what I teach in my coaching as well. Self-soothing is important, but it doesn’t actually train a new baseline.

Intercepting, over and over again, and choosing a different approach. Makes so much sense, especially when you consider how neuroplasticity works - gotta walk that new path a few times before it becomes more natural 😎

totally! especially since we are working with very old and stubborn neuropathways. needs a lot of repetition to create new pathways.

George, are you sure you're not a closet therapist? 🫶🏼 After reading many of your posts and listening to your content, the emergent theme is that change begins in your inner landscape first. When we bring curiosity and experimentation into a process or relationship, that IS the healing. As soulpreneurs, the nature of our vision is to help and teach others. Anything can be used to connect or disconnect us from our hearts. Even (and especially) our work. This process of reparenting is a way to reconnect when we disconnect, claiming our own oxygen so we can help others claim theirs. What a precious tending. 🙏🏼

This is just what I needed to hear today - thanks George. It's so true: the way we were parented was from a different time. I actually think it would be great to delete the words: mistake, fail and wrong. It seems to me that all of these experiences are so important for learning. I'm so glad to be an adult now :)

Loving this post, George! And that's exactly what I've been working on these past few weeks. Thanks for the reminder that we can parent ourselves in the way we wished we'd been growing up.

I talk to my inner child and let her know that I am there to support her, and ask her for expressions all, esp sense of joy. I make sure I 'go the other way' after catching myself being critical, frazzled, or stuck - like going for a walk, stretching, do something fun. (Since I was raised in very stern, austere culture)

Very useful ideas here, George. I do some specific reparenting processes with clients, shifting core neural pathways, as well as offering practical guidance.....harder to do for myself, but so necessary.
